About

The Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture Takes Pleasure in Inviting You to the Inaugural Mary Duke Biddle Lectures on the Ideas of Progress and Their Impact on Art documents a lecture series delivered in 1971 by the renowned art historian Ernst H. Gombrich

The publication records Gombrich’s reflections on the concept of “progress” in art—questioning the common assumption that art develops in a simple, linear improvement over time. Drawing on examples from Western art history, he argues that artistic change is shaped more by shifting cultural values, traditions, and creative problems than by steady advancement.

What makes this book especially notable is that it comes from the library of the firm John Portman & Associates in Atlanta, Georgia, with visible stamps showing its internal library identification.

John C. Portman Jr. was an American architect and real-estate developer known for designing large urban complexes that integrated architecture with commercial development. His best-known project, the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, popularized the dramatic multi-story hotel atrium and influenced late-twentieth-century hospitality design.
