About
Funk (1967) by Peter Selz was published by the University Art Museum, University of California, Berkeley to accompany the landmark 1967 exhibition of the same name. The book documents the emergence of Bay Area “Funk” art, a movement characterized by irreverent humor, raw materials, and a rejection of the polished aesthetics of mainstream modernism. Featuring works by artists such as Robert Arneson, Joan Brown, Bruce Conner, and William T. Wiley, the catalog includes essays, artist statements, and a checklist of works. It helped introduce Funk art to a wider audience and remains an important record of the countercultural spirit shaping California art in the 1960s.
